Speaker: Jim Mc Kenna has agreed to give a power point presentation on the American chestnut.
Jim plans to cover 4 facets of the American chestnut regeneration program:
1. The background on blight-resistance.
2. The American Chestnut Foundation (ACF) program.
3. The Indiana ACF program.
4. When we will have blight-resistant chestnuts.

The Fall meeting will be held at the AEd Yates@ pecan grove, now owned by Joe Ballard of Owensboro, KY, who has invited the Indiana Nut Growers and Kentucky Nut Growers for a joint meeting at his orchard. This is the pecan orchard which Ed planted and cared for, for many years. Joe reports that there are 18 identified varieties in the 180 trees, and a few more whose identifications have been lost.
Lunch starts at 11:30 Indianapolis Time / (Eastern STANDARD Time) which is one hour earlier than Kentucky (Eastern Daylight Saving Time).
It is understood by your editor that activity times will be listed as Indianapolis Time. We hope the KNGA folks follow thru on this, so that we truly have a Ajoint meeting!@ We hope the seasons (times) will not be Aout of joint.@ (Just couldn=t resist that one! Editor.)
For those of you who have never seen a commercial pecan harvester in operation, this is your opportunity to do so. Joe will be there to answer your questions concerning pecan growing. Jerry Lehman, representing INGA and Les Wilmouth along with Joe Ballard (KNGA) will handle the administrative and logistic arrangements for the meeting.
Joe has rented a tent and a couple of Porta-Potties for our comfort and convenience. Even though there will be a tent, please consider the possible cool weather in late October and dress accordingly.
Bring tables, chairs, and silver service, plus your contribution to the large pot luck lunch.
Directions: If you have never been to Chrisney, IN please look at your Ind. road map: You will find Chrisney located about 20 miles north of Owensboro KY. Using an Indiana highway map, choose your best route from your location to the southern part of US 231. For example, from Indianapolis: Take I 69/Indiana 37 from the south leg of I 465, south to Bedford, then follow US 50, west to US 231 at Loogootee . Turn south on US 231 and continue on 231 (checking your map) to County Road 950, (a gravel road) at the NORTH EDGE of Chrisney. Turn right (west) on C.R. 950. Go about a half mile. The pecan orchard is on your left.

Winter Meeting

We'll eat our normal pitch-in dinner at 11:30 Indy time. Meeting starts at 12:30. Bring a plate to pass and/or a nutty dessert. Other desserts are OK too. You must bring table service. There will probably be an auction, and we will have the results from any nut evaluations. Meeting is at the Marion County agent's office.

GRAFTING MEETING -- AT SPURGEON'S

SPRING MEETING (OR SCION WOOD EXCHANGE)

The scionwood exchange went well. I would estimate that we had 150 people present and lots of good grafting wood. The meeting place was excellent. I think back on the old place we used to have the exchange in and realize that we would never have fit. We are blessed.If you picked up some wood and don't know what to do with it, the next meeting is our grafting demonstration and practice.
FALL MEETING at PURDUE UNIVERSITY
The regular fall meeting was held at Purdue Univ. in W. Lafayette, IN on September 12, 1999. The host was fellow member, Dr. Bruce Bordelon. We were privileged to get a tour where we saw: 40 seedling chestnut trees (some bearing), 150 pawpaw seedlings (many were bearing, some heavily), apple test plots, many grapes (this is Dr. Bordelon's specialty), plums and a few pears. There remain a few nut trees that were planted back in the 1950s. They are filberts, pin oaks, persimmon, butternuts (4), and a very large Carpathian planted by Dr. "Pappy" Ward. Dr. Ward's Carpathian did not bear heavily this year (Dr. Bordelon told us that it typically bears such that the nuts are several inches deep under the tree) but we will try to get enough nuts for evaluation.

BUS TRIP TO CLAYPOOL
Claypools' orchard has over 2,000 persimmon trees. Jim had a serious medical problem last winter and is recovering slowly. Jim has turned over his work to the INGA. Members are invited to become involved with breeding and testing. James Claypool is the worlds' most prolific breeder of the American persimmon. He is cutting out persimmon trees to make room for others and many of these being cut out are better than most trees in the wild.
